A MODEL OF THE X-15 ROCKET PLANE in one of Arnold Engineering Development Center's high speed wind tunnels. The X-15 underwent air worthiness and stability tests at AEDC in the late 1950's. The X-15 achieved what no other aircraft had-- attaining altitudes of 67 miles and speeds in excess of 4,100 miles per hour (over Mach 5) -- in the late 1950's and early 1960's. AEDC played a major role in the development of the X-15 and continues to provide instrumental aeronautical tests for U.S. military, NASA, and commercial air and space craft.
